CBS Ranch follows Beefmaster Breeders United's Voluntary Classification Guidelines:

  • All cattle are visually inspected by a BBU field representative annually for desirable traits.

    • Each animal is classified according to BBU’s Standards of Excellence.

    • To be presented for a "U" classification, a female must be a minimum of 8 months with no upper age limit and a male up to 24 months with a scrotal measurement of at least 30 cm taken between 320-410 days.

      • To receive a number score on a female, she must have already received a "U" classification and have had her first calf so the BBU field representative can evaluate udder and mothering ability as consideration of her numerical score. Two numbers will be given; one for conformation and one for underline.

      • To receive a number score bulls must have already received a "U" classification, be a minimum of twenty-four months of age with a current scrotal measurement of at least 34 cm. Two numbers will be given; one for conformation and one for underline.

CBS Ranch participates is Beefmaster Breeders United's Weights and Measures Program:

  • This is a simple, fast and effective voluntary performance testing program developed by BBU for use by its members.

  • It includes computer analysis and printout of 205-day adjusted weight, 365-day adjusted weight, and sire and dam summaries. Information from the program is used in BBU's Sire Summary which is published twice a year.

    • The Sire Summary includes EPDs for birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight and maternal traits. Interim or non-parent EPDs are available on young animals not included in the Sire Summary. Since the early 1990s, participation in Weights & Measures has increased significantly, greatly increasing the amount and accuracy of performance information available both to breeders and buyers of Beefmaster cattle.

    • BBU's Pacesetter Award is based on information taken from the Weights & Measures Program.

      • This award recognizes bulls and females which have produced top performing calves. This award is designated on the animal's certificate of breeding with one asterisk (*) For more information and details, contact the BBU office for a Weights & Measures handbook or a current Sire Summary.
